North-South

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belts demonstrate North-South position

This position is typically a transitional position, meaning it is mostly used as a brief control spot before moving into other positions or submissions. This position is often very uncomfortable for the person on bottom, both physically and psychologically. While it isn’t easy to get a submission directly from this position, the struggle to escape this uncomfortable place will often lead to reckless motions which can open up great opportunities for improved positions or submissions from the attacker.
